The European Consumer Centre in Spain (EEC-Spain) has released the June edition of its bi-monthly newsletter, which features key developments and current issues related to cross-border consumer protection within the European Union. Among the highlights is the publication of the ECC-Net Annual Activity Report for 2024, which underscores the network’s positive impact in defending the rights of European consumers. Over the past year alone, ECC-Net legal teams assisted nearly 134,000 consumers across the EU, successfully resolving 59% of the cases amicably and recovering nearly 8 million euros for affected individuals.

The newsletter also raises awareness about a new scam involving identity theft related to ECC-Net. EEC-Spain has detected fraudulent attempts in which scammers impersonate staff members of the European Consumer Centres Network. These fraudsters contact individuals who have previously fallen victim to financial scams and falsely claim they can help them recover their lost money, subsequently requesting personal data via fake forms. In this context, EEC-Spain reminds consumers that ECC-Net never requests payments or personal information through unofficial channels and urges anyone receiving such communications to report them to the relevant authorities.

Another key topic in this edition is the coordinated action by 16 consumer organisations from 12 EU Member States. With the support of the Government of Spain, they have initiated proceedings to prevent seven low-cost airlines from charging extra fees for carry-on baggage—a practice that contravenes European consumer protection regulations.
