On 10 September at 9:00 CEST, the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, will present the 2025 State of the European Union address (SOTEU) to the European Parliament. This annual event is one of the most significant moments in the democratic life of the EU. Following the speech, a debate will take place in which the Commission President will report to MEPs and European citizens, review the progress made over the past year, and present the political priorities and new initiatives that will shape EU action in the coming months.

The State of the Union is also an opportunity to pay tribute to European citizens, highlighting stories of resilience, commitment, and achievement that inspire Europe as a whole — from Paralympic athletes to humanitarian workers on the front lines.

Why is SOTEU important for citizens?
The priorities announced in the SOTEU will be translated into concrete actions that directly impact people’s daily lives, such as:

  • Supporting businesses and creating new jobs across Europe.

  • Strengthening preparedness for extreme weather events such as floods and wildfires.

  • Investing in energy to lower household bills and advance sustainability.

The SOTEU is therefore a key moment to define the European Union’s direction, respond to today’s challenges, and shape the future of Europe. For this reason, the European Commission invites all citizens to follow the address and the subsequent debate with Members of the European Parliament live via the EU’s official portal.
