On World Tourism Day, which this year is being celebrated under the slogan ‘Tourism and sustainable transformation’, the European Consumer Centre in Spain (EEC-Spain) is encouraging consumers to travel sustainably, responsibly and with full knowledge of their rights as travellers in the European Union.
There is no doubt that tourism is an important driver of social and economic development, but it also requires a commitment to sustainability and consumer protection. For this reason, EEC-Spain reminds European travellers of some of their rights:
- Air passengers are entitled to compensation and assistance in the event of cancellations, long delays or denied boarding.
- Rail passengers are entitled to reimbursement or compensation in the event of delays, as well as adequate assistance while waiting.
- Package travellers are protected against cancellations, significant changes to the itinerary or the organiser's bankruptcy, with repatriation and reimbursement guaranteed.
Knowing and exercising these rights strengthens consumer confidence and contributes to fairer, more inclusive, and more sustainable tourism for all.

Tourism holds the power not only to foster peace, but also to drive empowerment, regeneration, and sustainable transformation of our world. The commemoration of this day on September 27 aims to raise awareness of the urgent need to commit to making tourism a platform that promotes systemic and sustainable transformation, guided by effective governance, strategic planning, and rigorous monitoring.
